EVERYTHING WE HAVE IN COMMON / SA SO SI AMENGE JEKHETHANE
08/11/ 2022 – 23/02/ 2023
The exhibition "All That We Have in Common" (Sa so si amenge jekhethane/All That We Have in Common) is organized within the framework of the 14th European Nomadic Biennial of Contemporary Art - Manifesta and will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art - Skopje on November 8, and will run until February 20, 2023.
The curators of the exhibition are Mustafa Asan, Mo Diener, Mira Gaqina and Jovanka Popova.
The Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje is a partner institution of one of the most significant contemporary art events, the 14th European Biennial – Manifesta. This means that the MCA is the organizer of a program unit, consisting of a discursive and exhibition program in the period from 2021 to the end of 2022.
Artists whose works will be exhibited at this exhibition are: Dillane Le Bass (England), Ahmet Kadri (North Macedonia), Sead Kazandziu (Albania), Lubos Kotlar and Robert Gabris (Slovakia), Roma Jam Session Art Collective – Mustafa Asan, Mo Diner, Milena Petrovic (North Macedonia/ Switzerland/Serbia), Nihad Nino Pušija (Bosnia and Herzegovina/Germany), André Jeno Racz (Germany), Emilia Rigova (Slovakia), Ceija Stojka (Austria), Dan Turner (England), Malgorzata Mirga-Tas (Poland), Durmis Kazim (North Macedonia).
The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in a space that is an organic part of the city entity in which the Roma community has lived for years, which is often the subject of political and social exclusion, misinterpretations, speculations and prejudices. The aim of the exhibition is to expand the political imagination beyond the stereotypical representation of it and, through shared knowledge from internationally renowned and domestic artists who are part of it, to articulate different ways of self-presentation, to centralize and make visible the widely ignored and inaccessible marginalized narratives about the Roma.
The exhibition offers an opportunity, through various issues regarding identity politics that Roma artists deal with, to equalize different socio-political voices and ways of acting in the public sphere, giving visibility to topics that are excluded from the dominant political discourse or are considered unsuitable in terms of ethno-narcissism and national fetishes.
Hence, "Everything We Have in Common" refers to works that introduce equivalence between different knowledges and association in action and seeks an appropriate solution by connecting different types of crises - systemic violence against Roma and other marginalized communities, the crisis of identity politics, gender inequality, the migrant crisis, etc. The exhibition addresses works that show the potential of art as a community and the possible viable and positive alternatives for acting on a level between the political and the intimate.
The exhibition presents contemporary international authors and analyzes the possibilities for sharing different voices and common care in the capitalist local and global context. At the same time, it opens up the opportunity to ask: “What is the world like when it is experienced, developed and lived from the perspective of differences?”, “What and how do we represent, which voices do we give priority to over others, what do we learn about ourselves through knowing the other?”, “Can the concept of care through different artistic strategies redefine the boundaries between bodies, collective structures, environments and the different political struggles of the marginalized?”.
This project is implemented within the framework of the Manifesta 14 Pristina - Western Balkans Project and is co-financed by the European Union and financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia.
