Acquisitions – Donations 2022-2023

18/05/2024 – 25/08/2024

From May 18, at the Museum of Contemporary Art - Skopje, visitors will be able to view the newly opened exhibition "Acquisitions - Donations 2022 - 2023".

Curator: Iva Dimovska

MSU-Skopje has been developing its international activity for a long time, through significant museum projects. As a confirmation of this, the presence of the museum's projects in the most prestigious world art magazines, such as Artforum, Frieze, E-flux… All this has increased the visibility of MSU, and thus opened up the possibility of new contributions to the international collection. After the donations of the Russian collective "What They Do", the Dutch artist Jonas Stahl and the German artists Jana Detmer and Monika von Eschenbach, the museum recently received ten new gifts, drawings and collages from the world-renowned Polish artists Artur Żmijewski and Pawel Altheimer, works created as a result of their "open studio" concept; a collaborative process of creating collages "live" realized at MSU. Also significant is the donation from the world-famous artist Ahmet Ogut, a series of five sculptures, in which the artist focuses on the reinterpretation of everyday life and new inspiring works that encourage critical observation. In addition to international donations, the museum has also received a number of gifts from individual Macedonian artists.

An exceptionally significant contribution to the period of art in the seventies and eighties of the 20th century are the donations of works or another large legacy (55 works in total) from the author Simon Uzunovski, donated by his heirs, whose conceptual artistic practice was the subject of historical revaluation at his recent retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art - Skopje.

With this exhibition of Acquisitions - Donations (2022-2023), the museum aims to present to the wider public that the only trump card for continuously enriching the collections is through quality program activities. Through this activity, the capital of the institution is increased, and it moves towards satisfying global museum trends.

The exhibition will present works by Macedonian and foreign authors that the Museum received through donations from the authors/heirs themselves, 82 works by 16 authors, of which 55 works of art are by the author Simon Uzunovski. But also through acquisitions, which were last realized in 2022, works by two Macedonian authors were purchased: Jovan Šumkovski and Simon Uzunovski.
